I have been using the Rosacea-Ltd product for about a year and it has helped my rosacea tremendously. Thank you so much! Both the website and the product have been so helpful. I have the acid vs alkaline chart in my kitchen and changing my eating habits has been very important. I recognize I need to be drinking more water, especially as winter is here, and I can tell a difference when I don't. I am just using Jojoba oil as a moisturizer as recommended, though my face (especially in winter) can get pretty dry. I am wondering if you have any other suggestions on this (besides the obvious of drinking more water).

I just wanted to write a short letter letting you guys know what a great product you have and how it has changed my life. This is my third or fouth order of the rosacea ltd discs and i have been using them for probably 3 years know. Before using this product inconjuction with jojaba oil, i struggled severely with flushed, red skin and moderate acne. I couldnt treat the acne because it flared my rosacea up. And i couldnt treat the rosacea because my acne would flareup even worse. Immediately after using your product for the first time my face resisted "flushing." It was like a miracle product. The sulfur in the discs also worked beautifully to stop my acne. I no longer had a complex routine to get my face treated every morning or night. Fibers from the dermis extend down and into the next main layer, the subcutaneous layer. They anchor the skin to it. The subcutaneous layer thins as we age, which creates a more angular appearance.

Blepharitis Can Occur in Ocular Rosacea

Blepharitis is a common inflammatory ocular rosacea condition. Blepharitis results in burning, itching and irritation of the eyelids. Other common ocular symptoms include sandy, itchy eyes, red and/or swollen eyelids, crusty, flaky skin on the eyelids, and dandruff. In severe cases, this ocular condition may also cause sties, irritation and inflammation of the cornea (keratitis) and conjunctiva (conjunctivitis).

The key to controlling blepharitis is to keep the eyelids and eye lashes clean. Home treatment should begin by soaking a clean washcloth in hot tap water. Place the compress on closed eyelids for five minutes, and then repeat. Next, gently scrub the eyelids with a washcloth or cotton swab soaked in a mixture of equal parts of baby shampoo and water. Afterward, rinse the lids thoroughly with warm water. This ocular treatment may need to be repeated two to three times daily for two weeks, and then reduced to once daily. Like dandruff, there is no cure for blepharitis; but with treatment, it can be controlled. Anti-inflammatory and antibiotic treatment drops or ointments may be necessary for flare-ups or more severe cases. Remember to remove all mascara before going to bed.

Significant tear dysfunction or blepharitis has been found to occur with ocular rosacea. If a symptom like blepharitis does occur with ocular rosacea, ophthalmologic surgeries such as photorefractive keratectomy or LASIK, both designed to correct vision or even cataract surgery should be avoided. Tear dysfunction can be improved in cases of ocular rosacea by increasing the moisture to the eye. Because the eye is 96% water, increasing your water intake will increase the moisture in the eye thereby decreasing irritation and dryness. For some this simply treatment is all that is necessary to control and manage their ocular rosacea symptoms.

Rhinophyma has been observed from ancient times in Greece and Arabia but first named by Hebrea in 1845. The term rhinophyma stems from the Greek words: Rhis (Greek for nose) and phyyma (Greek for growth). A year later in 1846, rhinophyma was first associated with rosacea. Daniel Sennert performed the first known surgery for rhinophyma in 1629.

Rhinophyma is a form of rosacea that is characterized by chronic redness, inflammation, and increased tissue growth of the nose. In the early stages it may be seen as nasal bumps. Rhinophyma commonly occurs as a result of untreated rosacea. As more bumps appear, the nose takes on a more swollen, misshapen appearance. Rhinophyma can take on many different forms. In most forms, the nose is chronically red and inflamed. There is also evidence of swelling, and the skin often shows thickened skin with large pores, resembling the peel of an orange (peau d' orange). In some forms, sebaceous gland hypertrophy and hyperplasia (increased growth and number of sebaceous glands) can cause the nose to grow considerably, resulting in a bulbous appearance. The Early Stages of Rosacea

The earliest recognizable stage of rosacea is called pre-rosacea. That blush of embarrassment that may pop up at an inopportune moment. The classic symptoms of pre-rosacea are patchy diffuse redness or flushing and inflammation, particularly on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and around the mouth. Pre-rosacea symptoms typically appear between the ages of 30 and 50 and may affect more women than men. Because the symptoms emerge slowly, rosacea may initially be mistaken for sunburn, leading to a delay in treatment.

Although rosacea may first appear as early as the teen years, rosacea most frequently begins when sufferers enter their 30s, 40s or 50s as a flushing or transient redness on the cheeks or nose, and in some cases the chin or forehead. In this earliest stage, some sufferers may report stinging or burning sensations, including the feeling of dry or tight skin.

The signs and symptoms at this stage of rosacea include frequent episodes of flushing and redness of the face and neck that come and go. Many things can trigger a flushing episode, including exposure to the sun, emotional stress, alcohol, spicy foods, exercise, cold wind, hot foods and beverages, and hot baths. What causes flushing in one person may not cause a problem in another.

Flushing usually occurs when the body becomes fatigued and/or stressed which stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. The key to this is the autonomic nervous system (more specifically, the sympathetic postganglionic efferent nerves). Any activation of these nerves causes vasoconstriction of "body blood vessels" -- except in the "facial blush/flush areas" where it induces potent vasodilatation or flushing with the resulting "rosacea flush".

The early signs and symptoms of rosacea may also occur as a result of products used to treat other skin conditions such as acne. As adults, when we get acne we have a tendency to treat it the same way we did as teenagers – our old acne over the counter cream or lotion packed with high concentrations of benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and sometimes even topical vitamin A products.

As our skin ages we find that the skin doesn't respond the same way to these acne products as it did when we were younger. The result is red blotchy areas, more breakouts; the facial skin may react by becoming oilier or dryer with increased skin sensitivity. In trying to control this, we apply even more and stronger treatments to our skin, but instead of seeing an improvement; we actually see more damage and skin-related issues as the skin creates more oil to protect it from the damage and abuse of these harsh chemicals. Thus creating a vicious cycle of over-medicating the skin causing increased facial redness, clogged pores and skin irritation.

Rosacea And Topical Steroid Use

In the treatment of severe facial eczema, one may be prescribed a limited time dose of a topical steroid. Initially the anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive effects of the topical steroids result in what appears to be clearance of the primary dermatitis. Cortisones work by decreasing inflammation, swelling, burning and itching at the site of application. When applied in an ointment they can help the skin maintain moisture. In general steroid ointments are stronger than steroid creams because the medicine penetrates better when in an ointment form.

Topical steroids are generally used to treat the symptoms of eczema, a skin condition characterized by itchy, red, scaly skin. They are also used for other inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis. They don't cure the conditions but can ease the symptoms. They work by reducing inflammation of the skin and thus easing the symptoms of itching, redness and swelling that occur with many skin conditions.

When a rosacea patient is treated for a prolonged time with topical steroids the disorder may at first respond, but inevitably the signs of steroid atrophy emerge with thinning of the skin and marked increase in telangiectases. The complexion becomes dark red with a copper-like hue. Soon the surface becomes studded with round, follicular, deep papulopustules, firm nodules, and even secondary comedones. The appearance is shocking with a flaming red, scaling, and papule-covered face.

Topical steroids frequently cause thinning of the skin if used for long periods of time. They can also cause acne-like pustules, dermatitis, broken blood vessels under the skin, stretch marks, loss of skin color (which may clear-up on stopping treatment) and, when used on the face, a rosacea-like disorder (reddening of the skin), also known as steroid rosacea. Other side effects can include itching, easy bruising, and in some cases skin infection.

The persistent use of topical steroids leads to epidermal atrophy, degeneration of dermal structure, and collagen deterioration after several months. Ultimately the skin develops the appearance of rosacea, and it is rendered extremely vulnerable to bacterial, viral, and fungal infection. Patients persist in using steroid creams or ointments because they have typically learned the hard way about the severe rebound inflammation that occurs if they stop. In short, they find themselves caught between rosacea like steroid dermatitis and the erythematous pustular eruptions of steroid rebound.

Steroid rosacea is an avoidable rosacea condition, which in addition to disfigurement is accompanied by severe discomfort and pain. Withdrawal of the steroid treatment is inevitably accompanied by exacerbation of the rosacea like symptoms.

On initial assessment, it can be very difficult to distinguish between true rosacea and its steroid-induced mimic. The neck and scalp are often the giveaway, said Dr.Roger Allen of the University Hospital, Nottingham, England. Steroid-induced rosacea is often diffuse, extending from the face down along the neck. In balding men, the scalp is often affected. True rosacea tends to be less diffuse. Unfortunately there is no easy way to resolve steroid-induced rosacea, short of ceasing steroid use. This is, admittedly, a hard sell to patients who have already experienced the severe erythema, edema, and pustular eruptions associated with steroid rebound. Topical or systemic antibiotics may be needed if the patient has a bacterial infection. Cold chamomile tea compresses are a soothing adjunct for patients in the throes of steroid backlash. It is important to understand the rebound phenomenon in steroid induced rosacea. The rosacea sufferer is often baffled by their observation that the same medicine that was so effective in clearing their primary dermatoses or acne is now causing this distressing rosacea like condition, and that their skin gets markedly worse if they stop treatment. Prudence in steroid use is essential. Patients with seborrheic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, or other dermatoses simply should not be treated with topical corticosteroids.

Understanding Rosacea Papules

Rosacea Papules are a small, red solid elevated inflammatory skin lesion without pus that is minor when the size is of a small measles lesion, moderate when about the size of a pencil eraser and severe when the papule is the size of a small currency coin or the tip of the little finger. The top of the papule may be flat, pointed, or rounded. Rosacea papules should not be mistaken for acne papules, which are common lesions in acne. Rosacea papules do not contain pus, while acne papules do contain pus. Rosacea papules may open when scratched, becoming crusty and infected. A group of very small rosacea papules and microcomedones may be almost invisible but have a sandpaper feel to the touch.

Vascular flushing is a primary cause of rosacea papules. Over time, flushing results in leakage of inflammatory cells out of the blood vessels and into the skin. These inflammatory cells then migrate toward the surface of the skin, resulting in inflammatory papules. Bacteria or demodex mites do not cause facial papules.

Usually observed in stage two rosacea, inflammatory papules may crop up and persist for weeks. Rosacea papules show a small pustule at the apex, justifying the term papulopustular. The lesions are always follicular in origin, mainly in sebaceous follicles but also in the smaller and more numerous vellus follicles. Comedones do not occur. The deeper inflammatory lesions may heal with scarring, but scars are inconspicuous and tend to be shallow. Facial pores become larger and prominent. If there has been much solar exposure over decades, one may observe the appearance of photo-damaged skin in a yellowed, leathered skin (elastosis), wrinkles and solar comedones. The papulopustular attacks becomes more and more frequent. Finally, rosacea may extend over the entire face and even spread to the scalp, especially if the patient is balding. Itchy follicular papules of the scalp are typical. Eventually, the sides of the neck as well may be affected.

Antibiotics are used to reduce the symptoms of rosacea, including redness, pimples, and red lines on the face (telangiectasia), and thick bumps on the nose (rhinophyma), and to reduce the symptoms that accompany eye involvement in rosacea. Antibiotics may reduce overall inflammation that occur with rosacea. Antibiotics also reduce the number of acne pimples and the amount of facial redness around pimples.

In the treatment of rosacea, a typical course of antibiotics would begin with an oral antibiotic, such as tetracycline. Oral antibiotics are usually tapered off after the rosacea symptoms improve because long-term use of oral antibiotics is associated with side effects. Bacteria build immunity to topical and oral antibiotics within 3 to 5 months; therefore they lose their effectiveness. It is important to note that a possible side effect of oral antibiotics is facial redness, photo or sun sensitivity and skin irritation.

Public health experts are concerned about antibiotic resistance, a problem that can develop when antibiotics are overused. Over time, bacteria develop new defenses against antibiotics that once were effective against them. Bacteria reproduce quickly; these defenses can be rapidly passed on through generations of bacteria until almost all are immune to the effects of a particular antibiotic. The process happens faster than new antibiotics can be developed. To help control the problem, many experts advise people to use antibiotics only for short periods, and only as directed. An antibiotic that works for one person with rosacea may not work for another.

A new term called "SuperBugs" was coined a few years ago as bacteria mutated to become immune to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were developed post World War II and have been considered miracle drugs until recently as bacteria mutations into antibiotic resistant strains have made them less effective. As the antibiotic fails to kill all the bacteria, the few remaining stains mutate to become resistant to that particular antibiotic. So a different and stronger antibiotic is used, but the mutations or genetic advancement allows the bacteria to tolerate the more stringent antibiotic and the cycle continues.

Laser Therapy for Rosacea: Separating the Myth from Reality

Rosacea laser treatment has been an option in rosacea treatment for time now, but to date, there have not been a lot of studies to either support or discredit its use in treating rosacea. The National Rosacea Society along with Rebecca Prescott with Acne-to-Health state that, “Despite years of use and significant technological advances, data on the effectiveness and safety of these products is limited. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies laser and light therapies as procedures, so stringent, long-term studies are not required. Most of what is known comes from observations made by dermatologists while treating individual patients.” Note: I wasn’t sure which one of them stole this statement from the other so I gave both credit. Rebecca further states: “IPL is not effective for everyone. However, most patients notice some reduction in dilated blood vessels and redness after only one or two treatments. In one case, a patient’s flush response returned to normal”. In one case the flush response returned to normal? But there have been hundreds if not thousands of procedures that have been performed in the last 40 years.

Rebecca goes on to explain how laser works: “the first working laser was produced in 1960, and they are in common use in medicine today. The laser works by applying energy to subatomic particles; this places them in an 'excited' state and they gain energy. These particles then move back to their original energy level and as they do, they release energy in the form of particles of intensely focused light - the laser. The light emits heat and the laser destroys the targeted tissue of rosacea. Laser treats rosacea by selectively destroying the inflamed, dilated, and hyper-responsive blood vessels without damaging surrounding skin. The laser 'energy' is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin (hemoglobin is the molecule in the blood cells that carries oxygen; oxyhemoglobin is hemoglobin that is saturated with oxygen) in the blood. This generates thermal energy that damages the adjacent blood vessel wall blood. The exact intensity of the wavelength is carefully chosen to destroy the dilated blood vessels using thermal energy without significant damage to the surrounding skin and to avoid surface scarring.”

In many diseases, doctors help the body do what it already wants to do. For example, if you get an infection, your doctor prescribes an antibiotic that works together with your body's immune system to clear the infection. Once you're better, you stop taking the antibiotic. In laser therapy your doctor is trying to oppose what your body wants to do. The body wants to make blood vessels grow, while your doctor tries to prevent that growth. Laser treatment can destroy or kill the blood vessels, but sooner or later the body will try to make blood vessels grow again, our bodies have an instinct for survival, rejuvenation and life. As the skin heals and rejuvenates it stands to reason that the blood vessels will re-grow. Then, the treatment needs to be repeated.

The success of rosacea laser treatment can depend on several factors, and there are many treatment protocols and many different types of lasers that can be used; argon, pulse dye, neodymium, carbon dioxide and krypton lasers have all been tried. Multiple treatments are often necessary and these are time consuming and expensive. There is certainly anecdotal evidence for the effectiveness of the laser in clearing up erythrosis and teleangiectasia, and many patients are satisfied. But surprisingly - given that rosacea laser treatment therapy is not new (it's been around since the 1980s) and is in widespread use - there is relatively little substantiated information about how useful it is; there is a distinct lack of controlled studies, and the Food and Drug Administration classifies laser therapy as a procedure, so its effectiveness has not evaluated in the same way as drugs.

Laser cannot be used for everyone. You should not have laser therapy if you have dark skin or a tan, it is contraindicated for people who have disorders of blood clotting, people who easily develop scars (keloids), or people with insulin-dependent diabetes. And although rosacea laser treatment can work for some people, it is not a cure. Relapses are possible and it is possible that the laser can make your rosacea worse.

"Laser therapy is now widely considered the primary treatment for telangiectasia (visible blood vessels) and rhinophyma (enlarged nose), and may also be very effective for reducing extensive redness," said Dr. Philip Bailin, chairman of Dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. "At the same time, medications must continue to be used to manage the papules (bumps) and pustules (pimples) that often go along with rosacea, and to help maintain remission. "Generally, at least three treatments are required at six-week intervals, depending on the severity of redness and telangiectasia," Dr. Bailin said. "Most patients will experience redness, swelling and soreness within the first 12 to 24 hours, but then they subside. Some patients also may have peeling, similar to that of a sunburn, and others may experience some bruising under the skin that lasts five to 10 days. He emphasized that, because of the chronic and relapsing nature of rosacea, patients should be given a proper perspective on their condition, including the need for continuing preventive therapy and avoidance of lifestyle and environmental factors that may trigger flare-ups. "The underlying cause of rosacea will still be there, and further laser treatment may again be required at a later time," he said. "There are no cures for rosacea, only good treatments."

Thinking about laser or light therapy?
If you are considering laser therapy or IPL to treat your rosacea, it is important to keep the following points in mind:

· Laser therapy is not a cure. While some patients experience dramatic results (such as the return of a normal flushing response) and the results can be long-lasting, neither laser nor light therapy cures rosacea. You still need to continue to see your dermatologist for treatment and avoid your personal rosacea triggers. To maintain results, additional laser or light treatment may be needed at a later time.

· Some patients not candidates for laser therapy. Do you have a suntan or any of the following medical conditions?

o Clotting disorder

o Tendency to develop keloids

o Insulin-dependent diabetes

Anyone with a suntan should not receive laser or light treatments. If you have any of the medical conditions listed above, be sure to tell your dermatologist because these conditions may increase your risk of developing an infection or problems with wound healing. Additionally, laser and light treatments are not recommended during pregnancy, as the effects on pregnancy are unknown.

· Have realistic expectations about the results of laser therapy. Most patients do see improvement; however, with any medical procedure there is always the possibility that you will only see a minor change or not see a response. Rosacea also may worsen. Your dermatologist can determine if you are a good candidate. To date, dermatologists have found that people with lighter skin who limit their sun exposure after the procedure tend to have better results.

· Successful treatment depends on several factors. Several factors — including your skin type, condition of your skin, your lifestyle, and the amount of sun exposure you get following the procedure — affect the short- and long-term results. For example, not protecting your skin from the sun after treatment can provoke a strong reaction, which can make rosacea worse.

· Check credentials, get an experienced dermatologist. As with any surgical technique, finding a dermatologist who is skilled in using lasers or IPL is essential. You should ask prospective doctors about their experience and training in this area. Ask who will be performing the treatment, the dermatologist or their assistant. Extensive experience in performing laser or light procedures helps ensure the best possible results.

· Laser treatment is not covered by insurance. Typically, the laser and light therapies used to treat rosacea are not covered by medical insurance. If you opt for laser or IPL therapy, you can expect to pay from $300 to $600 per treatment session. Laser therapy usually requires one to three treatment sessions to achieve the best results, and sessions are generally spaced four to eight weeks apart. IPL may require one to five sessions. IPL treatments are usually repeated every three weeks. With both laser and IPL, follow-up treatment may be necessary to maintain the results.

Chemical peels and retinoid products are used for the purpose of skin exfoliation, and are not to be used for rosacea. The skin needs to be 'intact' and not to be further aggravated by any chemical or mechanical peels of the below listed means. The objective is to help your body get rid of dead skin cells and to make your body build new skin quicker. Various products available today such as Retin-A, Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), and glycolic acid are all designed to burn dead skin cells off. The active agent in all these products is fruit acids.

The problem with using fruit acids such as AHA and BHA is that either you get acids that are very weak that do not remove many dead skin cells and therefore you see little results, or they increase the strength of the acid, and once the acid has burned through the dead cells, it continues on and begins to attack your living skin. If this happens you may experience one or more of the following; burning, redness, irritation and light sensitivity. In fact, acne treatment remains the primary use for beta hydroxy acids. Rosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha) is a relatively common, chronic skin disorder. Most people have no knowledge of this disease, including how to recognize it and what to do about it. Its classic symptoms are patchy flushing (redness) and inflammation, particularly on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and around the mouth. Rosacea typically appears between the ages of 30 and 50 and affects more women than men. Because the symptoms emerge slowly, rosacea may initially be mistaken for sunburn, leading to a delay in treatment.

Rosacea is a hereditary; chronic (long term) skin disorder that most often affects the nose, forehead, cheekbones, and chin (Dr. Berasques). Groups of tiny microvessels (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) close to the surface of the skin become dilated, resulting in blotchy red areas with small papules (a small, red solid elevated inflammatory skin lesion without pus) and pustules (pus-filled inflammatory bumps). The redness can come and go, but eventually it may become permanent. Furthermore, the skin tissue can swell and thicken and may be tender and sensitive to the touch. Note: Pustules are NOT pimples. Pimples have a bacterial component to their makeup and are also mainly localized in and around the hair follicles.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, Poison Ivy Rash is caused by a substance called urushiol, found in the sap of Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac. In those who are sensitive, urushiol causes a reaction in the form of a line or streak of rash (sometimes resembling insect bites) within 12-48 hours. Redness and swelling will be followed by blisters and severe itching. In a few days, the blisters become crusted and begin to scale. The rash will usually take about ten days to heal, sometimes leaving small spots. The rash can affect almost any part of the body, especially areas where the skin is thin.

Zinc oxide. Various medical physicians for the treatment of inflammatory acne have used topically applied zinc for decades. They have used zinc either as the primary ingredient or in conjunction with other anti-acne medications. Currently, zinc is found in several different active forms in hundreds of over-the-counter skin care products and anti-acne medications. Topically applied zinc has been shown to have a potent anti-septic effect (Drs. Provost and Farmer). More specifically, evidence suggests that zinc has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal actions, as well as mild anti-inflammatory actions. Zinc oxide has been used as a natural, mineral derived “skin protecting” sunscreen agent; an antiseptic, an astringent, and a soothing base in creams and lotions. Zinc oxide offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide is an ingredient in many skin preparations that has a mild astringent action and soothing effect. Blom and Hornmark were interested in a non-toxic, topically administered treatment that would be as effective as orally administered drugs such as antibiotics. To date, these medical physicians use topical sulfur as their primary anti-rosacea treatment (Drs. Blom and Hornmark). In a double-blind clinical study of 40 rosacea patients, these physicians found that rosacea-related papules and pustules responded much better to topical 10 percent sulfur than to oral antibiotics. More specifically, they found that with four weeks of topical sulfur treatment, the average number of papules and pustules dropped significantly (from 213 pimples before treatment to 17 pimples after treatment), that this clearing was much better than that attained by treatment with oral tetracycline. Sulfur is an important mineral component of vitamin B1 and of several essential amino acids. Sulfur is particularly necessary for the body's production of collagen, which helps to form connective tissue. Sulfur is also a component of keratin, the chief ingredient in hair, skin, and nails. By controlling bacteria and exfoliating the skin, sulfur is a popular acne treatment. Sulfur is thought to dissolve the top layer of dry, dead cells and slow down oil-gland activity. Research by Bass & Boney in 1999 determined that Patients with Rosacea often have seborrheic dermatitis which co-exists in 35% of sufferers which makes for a most delicate skin condition.1

In the summer of 2004, research by the National Rosacea Society verified these facts in a study of their own:

"According to a new study, rosacea is the most common facial skin disorder overlapping with seborrheic dermatitis (SD), a chronic and recurring inflammatory condition characterized by a red, scaly or itchy rash often found in the creases around the nose, the inner eyebrows or as dandruff on the scalp. Dr. James Del Rosso, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Nevada, found that 26 percent of rosacea patients had facial SD and 28 percent had SD of the scalp."2

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition which results in overactive sebaceous glands which cause inflammation, flaking and a red rash in the central portion of the face. If one looks closely, the flakes usually have a greasy look, smell and feel. The dryness of seborrheic dermatitis is perceived because of the flaking which consists of dried layers of accumulated oil.

Many have often wondered what exactly is rosacea? Is there one thing that defines rosacea as a condition or is it more of a group of symptoms that lead to the diagnosis of rosacea? In a definition provided by the International Rosacea Foundation, rosacea is an inflammation of the skin with resulting facial redness (erythema) and symptoms of vasculation of spidery blood vessels (telangiectasia), swelling (hyperplasia), rosacea papules (red solid elevated inflammatory skin lesion without pus). Rosacea's more pronounced symptoms can vary in intensity when exacerbated. Rosacea has often been described as a progressive disorder; however, the rosacea symptoms do not have to become progressively worse. Rosacea can be controlled, managed and improved easily and quickly.

Rosacea flushing usually occurs when the body becomes fatigued and/or stressed with the body becoming more acidic and thus more rosacea laden. The key to this is the autonomic nervous system (more specifically, the sympathetic postganglionic efferent nerves). Any activation of these nerves causes vasoconstriction of "body blood vessels" -- except in the "facial blush/flush areas" where it induces potent vasodilatation or flushing with the resulting "rosacea flush".

Stress stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and increases rosacea redness. Lack of sleep stimulates the sympathetic nervous system with a minimum of 8 to 9 hours being needed nightly to reduce stress and to reduce rosacea. Anxiety (fight or flight) stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and results in more rosacea redness. An increase in internal body temperature stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, whereas obviously a decrease in body temperature decreases the sympathetic system due to the parasympathetic system calming the system and calming the rosacea flushing.

I also have used the Rosacea Ltd. Disks, for 2 years now, (I just received
the new and improved (texture & feel) version (III)of the disks-very
smooth and creamy) with astounding success over all other creams,
antibiotics (oral and lotions) and gels I have had Rx's for, for the last
16 years. On rare occasion I will add tetracycline to the regime in times
of great stress (emotional or weather wise, esp.) for a few days to clear

What is claimed is:

Rosacea-Ltd Cleared My Ocular Rosacea

I was skeptical about purchasing Rosacea LTD over the Internet. I was desparate since all the prescription products stop being effective treatments. It was well worth it. The regime at the beginning takes some getting used to but the water intake required, cleared up my occular rosacea before I actually used the disks.

I visited my dermatologist and told her about the product and showed her the ingredients. She said I was the second person that day to have found them beneficial. She said to keep using it and see her back in one year for a check up!

Overall the cost of the disks, soap and oil is much less than all the prescriptions I used to purchase.

Rosacea-Ltd Has Improved My Skin

I've been using your product for about 4 weeks now, and my skin has really
improved. I had a mild case of rosacea on my cheeks and also perioral
dermatitis and occasional acne pimples. My skin was extremely oily, but at
the same time very dehydrated. A real mess! Products that worked for my
acne were making my rosacea worse, so I just didn't know what to do. I
tried so many things that didn't work, and for so many years, that I thought
that NOTHING could ever help clearing my skin. Until I found Rosacea-Ltd
III while searching on the Net. I reluctantly decided to try it (after
reading all the testimonies TWICE!). I am glad I did. Now the papules are
gone and the redness too. And my skin is much smoother, more supple, and
much less oily.
At first, I reacted very strongly to the Cetaphil cleansing bar and I had
to stop using it for a couple of days. But my skin got used to it after
about a week, although I have to be extremely careful when I use it. Maybe
it's not the best soap for my type of skin. As for the jojoba oil, I was
very reluctant to use it on my already very OILY skin. But it worked

Good Results With Rosacea-Ltd

I have been using Rosacea-LTD III for a year now, and am very happy with the results. I have fewer outbreaks of "bumps" and when I do have some, there are fewer of them. I have not made as many changes in my diet and fluid intake as I should have and intend to make more of those changes in the future. Understanding Ocular Rosacea

Ocular Rosacea is an inflammatory eye condition often associated with acne rosacea. Ocular rosacea can cause a persistent burning or gritty feeling in the eyes. For others, ocular rosacea manifests itself as inflamed and swollen eyelids with small inflamed bumps, eyelashes that may fall out, compounded by bloodshot eyes (Dr. Thiboutot). The ophthalmic signs of ocular rosacea can vary widely, including blepharitis, conjunctivitis, iritis, iridocyclitis, hypopyoniritis, and even keratitis. (These conditions will be described in detail below.) The term ophthalmic or ocular rosacea covers all these signs. The most frequent signs, which may never progress to a more severe condition, are chronically inflamed margins of the eyelids with scales and crusts, quite similar to seborrheic dermatitis, with which ocular rosacea is often confused. Pain and photophobia (abnormal sensitivity to light) may be present. The ocular complications are independent of the severity of facial rosacea (Drs. Gerd Plewig & Albert M. Kligman).

It is reported that 50 to 60% of all rosacea sufferers also have some sort of symptoms with their eyes which is known as ocular rosacea. In one study (Starr, McDonald 1969) it was found that ocular rosacea symptoms occurred in 58% of patients.

Sometimes (perhaps 20% of the time) ocular rosacea problems occur prior to the typical skin related rosacea symptoms though it is more usual (about 53% of the time) for the skin symptoms to appear first. (Borrie, 1953).

Ocular rosacea patients generally have chronically "bloodshot" eyes, dry eyes, and blepharitis (inflammation and debris of the eyelid margins). In severe ocular rosacea, there may be corneal ulceration (infection) which, if untreated, may even lead to perforation of the eye. This can be a potentially blinding complication.

People with rosacea have a tendency to be overall more dehydrated than others. The body is approximately 65% water while the eye is 96% water. Increasing your water intake will increase the moisture in the eye (thereby decreasing irritation and dryness). It has been found that increasing the amount of water consumed daily can ease the symptoms of ocular rosacea for many.

The dry eye syndrome, which often accompanies ocular rosacea, can also be treated with non-preserved artificial tears, as often as 4 times a day or more. Another ocular treatment is a home humidifier which may also add valuable moisture to the air. If these treatments for the symptoms of ocular rosacea are not sufficient, more drastic treatments may be needed. One such ocular treatment involves closure of the tear drainage ducts which is accomplished with silicone plugs, which are reversible, or punctal cautery (a burning of the tear duct openings), which is a relatively permanent ocular treatment.

Blepharitis is a common inflammatory ocular condition that affects the eyelids. It usually causes burning, itching and irritation of the lids. Other common symptoms include sandy, itchy eyes, red and/or swollen eyelids, crusty, flaky skin on the eyelids, and dandruff. In severe cases, this ocular condition may also cause sties, irritation and inflammation of the cornea (keratitis) and conjunctiva (conjunctivitis). Some patients have no ocular symptoms at all. Blepharitis, usually a chronic problem, can be controlled with extra attention to lid hygiene. However, it may also be caused by an infection which would require treatment with a prescription medication.

The key to controlling blepharitis is to keep the eyelids and eyelashes clean. Home treatment should begin by soaking a clean washcloth in hot tap water. Place the compress on closed eyelids for five minutes, and then repeat. Next, gently scrub the eyelids with a washcloth or cotton swab soaked in a mixture of equal parts of baby shampoo and water. Afterward, rinse the lids thoroughly with warm water.

This treatment may need to be repeated two to three times daily for two weeks, and then reduced to once daily. Like dandruff, there is no cure for blepharitis; but with treatment, it can be controlled. Anti-inflammatory and antibiotic treatment drops or ointments may be necessary for flare-ups or more severe cases. Remember to remove all mascara before going to bed.

Red, painful eyes may be the result of conditions known as episcleritis and scleritis. Both conditions involve inflamed blood vessels in the eye.

Keratitis is one of the more serious conditions which may occur in relation to ocular rosacea. Keratitis is a term used to cover a range of ocular conditions where there is infection or inflammation of the cornea. This condition may result in severe eye pain, blurry vision and sensitivity to light. Medical evaluation and treatment of keratitis is absolutely essential. Minor corneal infections are commonly treated with anti-bacterial or anti-fungal eye drops. If the problem is more severe, a person may receive more intensive antibiotic treatment to eliminate the infection and may even require steroid eye drops to reduce inflammation.

Iritis is an inflammation of the iris, a part of the eye. Symptoms include eye pain, sensitivity to light, and/or blurry vision. The symptoms of this may resemble conjunctivitis.

Sties can also occur in ocular rosacea. The best treatment for a stye is a warm compress. Apply a warm, moist washcloth to your lids for 5 minutes, four times a day. Following this treatment, within a few days the infection will either die down or come to a head and drain.

Chalazia, or bumps on eyelids, may also be a problem. Hot packs are the best treatment for these infections. However, if the bump fails to go away in a month it may be necessary to drain it. This treatment is done in your Ophthalmologist's office.

Treatment of ocular rosacea requires a highly motivated patient. With regard to ocular rosacea, treatment usually consists of lid hygiene measures, such as daily cleansing with cotton-tipped applicators (Q-tips). This entails cleansing the bases of the lashes with a moistened Q-tip to remove debris and oily secretions. Some ophthalmologists advocate cleansing with diluted baby shampoo, while others believe that plain water is best. Often, an antibiotic or combination antibiotic-steroid ointment is prescribed for various periods of time, depending on response.

We also have found it beneficial to include in your diet three servings per week from the Omega-3 supplements. These essential fatty supplements aid in an overall balanced diet as well as easing the discomfort of ocular rosacea.

Antibiotics from the tetracycline family such as Doxycycline and Minocycline are often prescribed to bring symptoms of ocular rosacea under control. Studies of the use of Doxycycline by patients with ocular rosacea showed significant improvement with a variety of signs/symptoms including dryness, itching, blurred vision and photosensitivity, scales, erythema and telangiectasis (Quarterman 1997)

For dry eyes, some rosacea sufferers use Celluvisc Eye treatment drops found at drug stores or grocery stores. They are much thicker than the usual eye drops and can be used without taking out contact lenses. Because of the thickness of the eye drops, they may temporarily impair vision.
